Trading coins is a very complex activity especially to a first time seller and to a collector who has not fully understood the basics of coin collecting or even to a person who is ignorant to following simple instructions and guidelines.
As a starting point, a coin that is valid and acceptable to be traded should have gone through proper identification, good storage and also proper grading by a professional coin appraiser.
Here below we have highlighted the crucial steps of trading that are strictly followed after you have placed and offered your coin for trading.
Coin Trading Procedure :-
As all other types of markets worldwide, a coin is the item of trading in the coin collecting engagement. It has to follow a laid down procedure and channel of transfer so that it moves from the owners possession into the interested persons possession. These transfer is conducted in several steps.
1. Coin Specifications
The market or the demand or in simpler terms, the buyer, normally issues the specifications of the coin that meets their needs and what they are looking for.
These specifications are usually indicated and described in advance so that only coins that fit the description are accepted for trading. As a coin trader you will be at an advantage if you present only coins that fit the specifications described.
The most crucial specifications may include but not limited to for example the year on the coin, image on the coin, country of origin, inscriptions on the coin, colour of the coin and also it’s condition as per The Sheldon Coin Grading Scale. The expected price value of the required coin may also close the list of specifications.
Once you intend to present your coin for consideration, being aware of the specifications of the required coin is the first step of trading so to ensure you find and present only coins that are eligible and acceptable for trading.
2. Coin Presentation
Now you already have observed your coin and compared it to the specifications required and you realize that it correctly meets the specifications and you are OK with the exchange price too.
Next is you will have to show and prove to the market and to the buyer that you have the coin that is being sought after. These part of trading is called Coin Presentation and it is very crucial as well as important.
Coin Presentation involves taking a clear and visible photo of your coin. The photo should visibly show your coin in a way that it is easily observable by the buyer for initial verification.
So to achieve these, you may be at an advantage if you have some basic facts in mind when you want to make an acceptable presentation of your coin.
Use a camera that has a high resolution of preferably 15 megapixels minimum. Always keep in mind the focal distance between your camera and the coin and also avoid sudden movements when taking the photo so to ensure you take still, clear and visible photos.
Take the photo in a bright and artificial lighted environment. These ensures your coins features are visible and easily identifiable. You can be at an advantage if you avoid using natural light. Point to note is the background onto which you place your coin for the photo shoot. Ensure it creates a good contrast that does not seem to hide your coin.
Lastly make sure you clearly label your presentation. Be aware that you might not be the only person making a presentation so include and write most basically your name, where your coin is located and essentially the date of taking the photo. These will indicate to the market that you really own the coin and it is available as at the date indicated on your presentation.
Write also a short description of the coin. These will come in handy and help you in overcoming competition especially incase many people also have the same coin as yours. Include the year of the coin, denomination and type of coin too.
Once you have set up your presentation and you have a well set up photo with all the required information indicated, then you are ready to forward it to the market so as to impress and sway the buyer to consider having a closer trading conversation with you.
3. Coin Selection
No matter how rare or scarce a coin might be, chances are very high that you will not be the only person having that particular coin of interest.
Coin collecting is a world wide business activity and it attracts many collectors. Once demand for a particular coin of interest is declared then many people may get the information and come up with the same coin just like you.
A buyer will always and most likely be interested in getting the best conditioned coin that best fits the specifications they had issued. The buyer definitely may not be in a position to buy all the coins presented so they will end up selecting one, a few or the quantity of coins that suit their trading requirements.
If when you were preparing your coins presentation, you had not taken into account the basics of presentation described earlier in our guide then your coin will not be in a position of being selected for business.
Of all the steps of trading which are done on an individual and personal level, only the selection stage is done as a group activity whereby all presented coins are compared against each other. Only the people who presented the best coins as per the laid down specifications are selected to move higher up the trading ladder and closer to being paid for their valid coins.
4. Coin Payments
After your coin has emerged as the best that fits the required specifications then it is time now for you to move to payments stage of trading.
Payments stage is a crucial part of trading and is influenced by several factors that we will cover later on in our guide.
Basically payments can be done before delivery of coins, during delivery of coins or after delivery of coins. Payments can also be done in a half price being made before delivery and half after delivery.
Payments are usually done either in cash, mobile money transfer or via bank account transfer. These can be determined by the quantity of the payment or by the wishes of the collector as in how you may want the payment to be transferred to you.
5. Coin Delivery
Coin Delivery is the process of handing over or transferring selected coins from the coin holder to our company.
Once your coins have been selected for payment, then comes the process of transfer of the coin which can be done under various arrangements.
There are various arrangements that we use to collect coins that have been shortlisted for payment and also coins that have been paid for in half or in full depending on the class of trading under which a coin collector is trading under.
Firstly we have accredited company agents who are sent out to pick coins from coin holders. You will be required to choose and communicate your location of choice where you would wish an agent to get up to so to pick up your coin provided it is a safe location in a public place due to security concerns.
Secondly a coin holder may choose to use a trusted courier service provider of our choice to deliver the coin to us. There are various courier services both local and international that offer great packages including insured delivery.
Thirdly a coin holder depending on the class of trading they are under, may be allowed to make an in-person delivery via appointment.
